Heya, Avid Fans! It’s Jezebel, coming at you from the dark studio of Cat and Muse. Melpomene’s got the week off, so I thought I’d do my Dear Creator, Jackie Kessler a favor. (Yeah, I know: I’m a demon. I don’t do favors. My motto is: Always keep ‘em guessing.)
See, she just finished the chapter outline for the third HELL ON EARTH book, Hotter Than Hell. But the problem is, she needs a name for an important character, who happens to be a demon of Lust. Yep, Dear Creator needs a name for an incubus. (The name “Daunuan” is taken, as preview readers of Hell’s Belles already know.) Jackie wants a name before US Thanksgiving this year (next Thursday, yo), so the deadline for entries is Wednesday, November 22.
So here’s the deal: You can either comment on this post with your suggestion for an incubus name, or you can email your suggestion to Jackie directly (click over to the “Contact” section for the info), and put “Incubus” in the subject line. No restrictions on the number of times a person may enter.
The winner (yep, only one) gets another character named after him or her, as well as the incubus character name in the book, an acknowledgment in Hotter Than Hell, and something from Jackie’s swag bag.
Have at it!

Well, of course, I’d consider “Tristan” to be more than fitting for any demon of lust… but then there’s that little problem of intellectual property… would my memoirs be considered infringement of copyright? So it’s got to be just different enough…
G’s, A’s, L’s and N’s are all popular letters in the demon alphabet, so my reccommendations are: Gravanello, Argosten, Lucarello, or Nicholeus, something in that vein.
In the tradition of famous seducers (DonJuan?), something along the lines of ‘Cassano’ after Casanova… or, focus on things that have an easily reduceable nickname… Nichadnezzar becomes “Nick”,
Barchoras becomes “Barky”, etc… I don’t know. Naming is soetimes the hardest part… but best of luck!

Incubus comes from the Latin words meaning “I Lie on Top”…
German — an evil language if ever there was one — occasionally refers to the top as “Oberseite”
“Oberseite” is my entry. “Obi”, if you prefer.

Entry # 1
Erebus
This is a Latinized (er, yea that’s a word) greek name.
Ερεβος (Erebos) means “nether darkness”. Erebus is the personification of the primordial darkness in Greek mythology. Maybe a bit too dark. Needs to be sexier…
-
Entry #2
Simply but to the point. The word for Lust in several differnt languages
German: Gier
Portuguese: Cobice
Italian: Lussuria (but this is a feminine word. Dang.)
I quite like Cobice, very demonic sounding.
-
Entry #3
CINÁED
This means “born of fire” in Gaelic, that sounds about right for a demon of lust to me, plus gaelic guys are hot. “This was the name of the first king of the Scots and Picts (9th century). It is often Anglicized as Kenneth.”
-
Entry #4
oh yea, this is it, i like this one.
Asmodeus - (Hebrew) devil of sensuality and luxury, originally ‘creature of judgement’. He was the overseer of all the gambling houses in the court of Hell, and the general spreader of dissipation. In addition, Asmodeus was the demon of lust, responsible for stirring up matrimonial trouble.
good times…

Entry #5
Okay I knew I’d heard this story when I was studying in France about these nuns who were posessed by a lusty demon, and TA DA I found it/him.
Asmodeus, Asmoday - (Hebrew) god of lust. A demon most commonly involved in possession cases, particularily noted in the possession of the Louviers nuns
-
I am very slow and just realised that #4 and #5 are the same thing. Maybe I should actually pay attention to the conference call I am on and stop playing on-line.
-
My name for your incubus is Tobias..it came right to me as I read the bulletin on MYSPACE. Besides, Tobias sounds like Incubus and is a strong name. Girl, I think Tobias would be great….
See ya on MYSPACE!

How about CALISTO. It means Most Beautiful.
Ter

having been advised that I have chosen names that Jackie is already using…
Entry #6
Jamil, this is the masculine name meaning beautiful or elegant.
-
Entry #7
This might be it.
Sevilen, Turkish for loved. See then you could put
LOVED …to death! bwah ha ha!

I like Ewoh… it doesn’t mean anything, but I like it.

A few names I’ve always liked…
Sebastian- the irony of this is that it’s actually a Saint’s name, so to have an incubus named Sebastian, well just imagine the jokes.
Cian- means “ancient”, which is obviously appropriate. However, I hear that name and think of someone young, strong, supple. Pronounced Kee-an.
Iah- strange looking name, but it sounds cool. It’s egyptian. Means “moon”.
And last but not least,
Seth- Seth was the evil Egyptian god of chaos and the desert, the slayer of Osiris. Orisis’ son Horus eventually defeats Set and has him banished to the desert.

I’d say Lucian or Lucius.
-
Damon
Classic and simple. In greek it means to tame or subdue.
-
Damian
a derivation of the above name! Gotta love greek with it’s million variations. Still means to tame or subdue
-
Damien
(same root as above two, yet more veriations!) Maybe too obvious being so close to demon?
-
How about something unexpected like Fred? Or Joe? It could be short form for a longer demonic name, but I like innocuous names for potentially dangerous characters.

Demon of Lust- Sonnielion. Which would fit both a man or female. Sonnie for female or Sonny for a male.

I’m going to say Caleb. Or Kane. For some reason, those are the ones that popped into my head as soon as I read your post. Although I am a little late.
