Update: Found my copy of James Butler's Academ's Fury. Thought I'd lost it. So now I'm reading that, and it's triggered a blog post I now need to compose.

Just finished Jim Butcher's Furies of Calderon and starting on Thomas Harlan's The Shadow of Ararat. Neither is what you'd call a bog standard fantasy.

Coincidentally both a the opening works in a tetralogy. But Jim's Codex of Alera is a tighter work that retains it's original focus. Tom's Oath of Empire is more rambling, and changes direction with the introduction of the character Mohammed. Yes, that Mohammed.

Both do have one thing in common, the characters are flawed. They err, they get injured, some die. There are heroes, but no villains in the traditional sense. Some do evil because of pride and anger, others do evil because they wish to do the right thing.

So that's what I was reading, and what I'm now reading.

I just finished one of the best books I've read in a long time:

MISSPELLED edited by Julie Czerneda.

Every single story delighted me. It's been awhile since I enjoyed a book that much.

I am reading Happy Hour of the Damned by Mark Henry right now and loving it!

Next on the list is Wicked Game by Jeri Smith Ready.
