Loving Husband and I stayed up late to listen to Senator McCain’s concession speech, and then to hear President-Elect Obama’s words to America. And for the first time in months, I feel like I can breathe again.

I’m proud that we went as a family to vote yesterday, and that Tax Deduction the Younger was with me and Tax Deduction the Elder was with Loving Husband, and that as a family we voted in the most important election in recent history — perhaps in the history of America itself.

I’m proud that Senator McCain was gracious in his speech and that he called for an end to division and praised President-Elect Obama. The senator has served this country for fifty years, and for that he has my respect.

And I am thrilled by President-Elect Obama’s words to America. As I listened last night, I found myself excited about not just politics but by the possibility the future could bring. I listened, and I felt in my heart that I want to believe. I do believe that President-Elect Obama is the best leader we could have in troubled times — and I feel in my spirit that he is the leader we deserve as a nation that was argued into existence, a land that was forged on dreams and faith and hope. Blood and tears, yes; that as well. No fight is an easy one. And he will come to office in a time of crisis that we have never seen before — economically and socially, fighting two wars, fighting to regain our lost stature in the world, all the while embracing all the peoples of our nation and saying “I am your President too.”

“Yes we can,” President-Elect Obama said very, very early this morning, heralding in a new day and a new age for America.

And I believe in my heart that yes, we can.

    1. I too am hopeful for the first time in 8 very LONG years! As a Federal employee, I have seen the difference administrations make in so many small aspects that most people are unaware of and I am cautiously optimistic that the US is on it’s way to economic recovery, repaired and strengthened international relations and Peace.

    2. I was moved to tears by President-Elect Obama’s speech and by the graciousness of Senator McCain. I actually teared up when I voted yesterday because this election was so very important for our country. We have a President-Elect that both won the popular vote and an overwhelming majority of the Electoral College votes. Yes we can, indeed.

    3. *sigh* I’m not happy. Honestly, I didn’t like either choice, but I went with McCain because I just don’t think Obama has the experience to lead our military. There’s no question the man is intelligent and and charismatic, but I just don’t think he’s had enough exposure in government to comprehend the complexities that being president of the most powerful country in the world entails.

Obama has only served as state senator in Illinois for four years (1996-2000), lost in his first bid as member of the US Senate in 2000, and won in his second attempt in 2004. He’s been in the national scene for only four years. That’s 8 years total if you count his state level experience.

Anyhoo…I just had to go and be odd-man-out on the board…LOL. I don’t really have anything against the man, I think I would’ve been more inclined to vote for him had he “seasoned” for at least another 10 years before running for President. I never expected McCain to win and I’m honestly not a very political person. I hate, hate, hate, election years. Quite honestly, I’m just glad the whole thing is over so my shows will quit getting disrupted by campaign adds and debates. :)

    4. It’s the firt time in a long time I feel any hope for this country.

Even better, I won’t have to expatriate for the next four years.

      I’m so relieved I’m a limp rag.

    5. I’ve heard a lot of people speak against our new president-elect. I’ve heard many people speaking about how frightened they were (fueled by Sarah Palin’s hate rallies)of this man…not his policies, but the man, himself. One woman mentioned she was afraid Obama was secretly against white people. To me, this is the TRUE difference and significance of what happened last night.

All my life (and it’s been long)I’ve voted for the lesser of two evils. For men I KNOW did not have MY interests at heart. I voted for what I thought would be best for America, not for the person who would advance my own personal wishes. I did NOT vote for Jessie Jackson when he ran. Neither did most blacks. That man was never worthy. And I did not vote for Obama because he was black. For the first time in my life, I voted my HEART. I voted for the most worthy candidate. And I will support him with my time and efforts. I will BE an American. Not a black American or and African American. Just American.

Now, for those who are frightened. Our gracious president said, “For those of you whose support I have not yet earned, I hear your voices. And I WILL be your president, too.”

Not a single man before him ever said that to ME.

God bless AMERICA. and God (Higher Power, Light) bless Barack Hussein Obama, by the will of the people, 44th President of these United States of Americans!!!

    6. Camille,
For the woman who said to you that Obama is secretly against White people is a moron. The man is biracial; his mother is White, and his father was African. He is a combination of both; biracial.

He loved his White grandmother who passed away on 11/3/08. That woman who told you that is just afraid of how she’s secretly hated Black people and is afraid that someone will treat her as she’s treated them. I hate ignorance! Tell her Camille, for me!

Sorry, rant over. I’m happy he won and the haters will have to deal with it or move to another country where Obama is not liked. Oh wait, there is no such place! LOL.

    7. Oh, happy day! I have been close to giddy. It is wonderful to feel hopeful about our country’s path for the first time in so many years.
