    A Whole Lot of Hell

First, I’d like to thank everyone who has been downloading HELL TO PAY for the Kindle or the Nook. You guys totally rock, and as soon as I’m done writing LOSS, outlining BREATH, and doing sample chapters for a Sooper Sekrit Project, I will start writing BEFORE THE FALL — basically, Hell 2.0, if you read the author’s note at the end of H2$.

Second, the fabulous Falcata Times did a back-to-back-to-back review of the UK editions of HELL’S BELLES, THE ROAD TO HELL, and HOTTER THAN HELL. Much Hellish love! And they also interviewed me about tons of things — good for readers and writers alike! Thank you, Falcata Times!

Third — and okay, this isn’t Hell-related — one of my local newspapers interviewed me about HUNGER, and then promoted the library event I attended this weekend. Great fun!

And last (for now), I posted over at the Deadline Dames, answering a reader’s question about whether you should take agent rejection letters to heart or not.

    And now…back to the WIP!

    HELL TO PAY: the e-book

It’s finally happened, everyone: HELL TO PAY is an e-book! Well, okay, it’s still in process at Amazon (sorry, Kindle readers), but it looks like it’s ready for download at B&N.com (hooray, Nook readers)! There is a cool scroll-like image under the chapter headers, which I believe looks great on the Nook but less so on the Kindle, so I may swap out the Kindle file with a version that has no scrolls. Unless a funky block image doesn’t bother you. (I don’t know, this is all new to me.)

The e-book is $2.99. I think that’s pretty reasonable for a 96,000-word novel that closes the Hell on Earth series. If you disagree, please let me know; remember, this is all a big experiment that will help pave the way for BEFORE THE FALL, the first book of the upcoming Pit and Paradise e-book series. Your opinion matters to me!

So here is the link to download HELL TO PAY on the Nook and other readers that read Nook files.

EDITED: And here is the link for the Kindle version. I don’t know if it’s live yet; the text description isn’t up.

If you read HELL TO PAY as the free online serial novel and you enjoyed it, could you please leave a review on B&N.com (and, once it’s available, Amazon.com)? I would hugely appreciate it. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Heads up that the HELL TO PAY content will be coming off my website shortly, with the exception of the prologue. So if you want to read the entire thing for free without A) being a pirate or B) borrowing the e-book version legally from someone who bought the download, I strongly suggest you do so quickly.

    Thanks again, everyone.

    Pit and Paradise

Thank you to everyone who commented on Hell to Pay, and on whether they would read Pit and Paradise if it were an e-book series. So here’s what’s going on.

    1. I’m going to be posting HELL TO PAY as an ebook on Kindle, for $2.99. Before I can do that, I have to format it, and the person who was going to do that for me has flaked out, so first I have to learn how to format it. So this will be coming soon, but that’s all I can say for the moment.

    2. I’m going to move forward with Pit and Paradise. Well, with the first book, definitely, and if that goes well, I’ll write the rest of the series. 🙂 So the plan is this: I’m going to write P&P book 1, BEFORE THE FALL, and that will be an ebook. Part of the fun will be that readers won’t need to have read the Hell on Earth series before reading Pit and Paradise. Spiffy, eh?

So you may be wondering when this momentous event will take place. Let’s see. I have two contracted books I have to write/finish (LOSS and BREATH, books 3 and 4 of The Riders’ Quartet), plus two short stories (one YA, not part of the Quartet, the other adult, and does not include demons, angels, or superheroes), plus a YA proposal. I have to write the synopsis of BEFORE THE FALL to use it as a road map (plotting AND pantsing, FTW!), and then I have to, you know, write the book. I’m thinking it will be first person, with some third person thrown in. (How’s that going to work? Give me time. I’ll figure it out.) Jezebel — a little different from the Hell on Earth Jezzie, and if you read HELL TO PAY, you know why — will be the main protagonist. Daunuan will have a very important part, I promise. As will Paul. And Alecto. And Caitlin. And…

    I’m getting ahead of myself.

Hmm. How about this: I’ll aim for BEFORE THE FALL e-book publication for January 2012. This isn’t set in stone, but I’ll do my best to make that happen.

And if you want to send me encouraging notes along the way, feel free! 🙂

PIT AND PARADISE, by Jackie Kessler. Some days, it just doesn’t pay to stop the Apocalypse.
    Coming Soon!

    Now available: Buffy Tales

Happy 2011, everyone! What better way to kick off the new year (okay, two weeks later) than by spending money? But not just on any purchase. Spend it on Buffy!

    Yes, that's really Buffy!

My Buffyverse short story, “Carpe Noctem (parts 1 and 2)” is part of the new hardcover graphic novel, BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER: TALES. But don’t just buy it for my story about two vampires making their way in the brave new world (or for the spiffy BNW quotes I have in it). Joss Whedon wrote a number of stories too! The contents include MySpace Dark Horse Presents #31 and #32; Tales of the Vampires: Carpe Noctem parts 1 and 2; Buffy: Tales of the Vampires one-shot; Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Tales of the Vampires #1–#5; Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Tales of the Slayers #1–“Broken Bottle of Djinn”; Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Tales of the Slayers TPB. Rah!

    **happy happy happy**

Okay, off to jury duty with me. And off to the bookstore with you. 😉
